We are a small dedicated group of medical students at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine curious about ophthalmology with big dreams.

The medical school curriculum offers far too few opportunities to explore and discover this amazing field. Meanwhile, applying into ophthalmology happens early; while waiting for the incidental elective clerkship in the 3rd or 4th year to fall in love with this specialty is often too late to put together a successful residency application.

We hope to offer medical students at all stages of their training the opportunities to discover ophthalmology through clinical, laboratory, volunteering, research, & mentorship events.

We have 4 annual events: 2 specialty panels & 2 hands-on workshops. Our fall interest panel is composed of faculty & residents, and is intended to give students a broad perspective of the field, its subspecialties, the life of an ophthalmologist, and the things that excites these practicing physicians about their field. The spring residency panel is composed of junior residents & newly matched medical students discussing the components of a successful application. The slit-lamp workshop is in the clinic where students learn how to use that most quintessential tool of the ophthalmic health provider, the slit-lamp. In the simulation lab workshop students have an opportunity to practice suturing under the microscope on pig eyes and with the aid of robotic simulators.

We are located on the west side of the vibrant city of Chicago. Being at University of Illinois at Chicago means we are fortunate to call the prestigious and historic Illinois Eye & Ear Infirmary (IEEI) our home. With that comes access to the many of the best eye surgeons & mentors in the country.

“It's not about how you look,

It's about how you see.”

What is Ophthalmology?

The eye, its surrounding structures and the visual system can be affected by a number of clinical conditions. Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine that involves diagnosis and therapy of such conditions, along with microsurgery.
